Merkel, world leaders, put brave face on Copenhagen Accord

German Chancellor Angela Merkel had hoped for more than the bare-bones minimum at the Copenhagen climate conference, but has warnedagainst 'bad-mouthing' the outcome.
In an interview with the German daily Bild am Sonntag Chancellor Merkel defended the meager results, after nearly two weeks of haggling, saying it was at least a "first step" toward a new global strategy on climate change and one that "now needed to be built upon."

She quickly admitted, however, that she would have preferred "more steps," but that one should still refrain from "bad mouthing" the outcome.

Merkel noted Germany's special responsibility in the next phase of diplomatic negotiations to combat global warming. The chancellor stressed that her government would work to move the results forward when the next climate conference convenes in Bonn, Germany, in the middle of next year.

Leaders try to put a positive spin on the outcome

Delegates to the summit, which ended Saturday, admitted that only a bare-minimum agreement was reached that fell far short of the original goals.

Although UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon also called the deal a "significant first step",
he regretted that "much was left to be done."
Putting a brave, but almost cynical, face on the outcome, US President Barack Obama called the results "an important breakthrough". "For the first time in history, the world's major economies came together to accept their responsibility to act in the face of climate change," Obama said.

Admitting that the negotiations had been "extremely difficult" and "complex", the US president said the Copenhagen Accord paved the way for international action in the coming years.

Even the Chinese, who many blame for blocking the negotiations, defended the outcome, saying the conference ended with "important and positive" results. Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said the conference was "not the goal, but rather a new beginning

German opposition and environmentalists outraged

Germany's opposition Social Democrat leader, Sigmar Gabriel, called the conference outcome a "mid-sized disaster" and said it was "a disgrace how world leaders were playing with the future of their children and grandchildren." He called on Germany and the European Union to "stick to their promise to reduce CO² emissions by 30 percent" by 2020.

Green party chairwoman, Claudia Roth, called the outcome "a betrayal of the future for all the children on this planet" and urged the EU to convene an extraordinary summit to at least establish binding climate goals for its members.

The head of the German Conservation Society, Olaf Tschimpke, said Copenhagen ended with a "rotten compromise." His counterpart at Germany's BUND conservation group, Hubert Weiger, said the world was left "bitterly disappointed" and the anti-globalization network, attac, called the summit "a farce" and "historic for its failure."

The climate conference ended with the promise to continue negotiating, but without a deadline, after 14 years of preliminary negotiations.

Chuck Molnar, Senior's Corner, Dec. 19, 2009: Health care reform confusing to seniors

can see why many seniors are concerned about the federal government's health reform program since November happens to be my birth month. This is a period in which Medicare recipients are allowed to change their Medicare Supplemental Health Insurance provider without any qualifying factors.

After meeting with a HICAP representative, talking to my insurance agent and even comparing a much lower cost supplemental insurance policy to the one I presently have, I still have nagging doubts as to what I should do. After all it is a matter of one's health care isn't it?

If you have read anything at all about health care reform it actually should, I think, be titled: "Health Insurance Reform", you know that the effort to improve our health system, and to make certain all Americans are included, has gone on since the time of Teddy Roosevelt's administration.

In spite of out-of-control costs, we still hesitate to go from the known to the unknown. But that didn't stop people like Christopher Columbus and Magellan. Then what am I so afraid of? What are we so afraid of?

I think I'll call my insurance agent. After all, Supplemental Health Insurance Policies are, by law, supposed to provide comparable benefits, aren't they? And we all could use a little extra money, right? And the AARP supports President Obama's health reform efforts.

The next meeting of the Santa Cruz County Seniors' Commission will take place Tuesday, Feb. 16 from 1:30-3:30pm. The

location and topics to be announced later.

Chuck Molnar may be contacted by calling the Santa Cruz County Seniors' Commission office at 454-2355.

US snowstorm: Your stories

Much of the eastern US is in the grip of a winter storm, with a snow emergency being declared in Washington DC.

At least five deaths have been blamed on the weather, as forecasters warn of 35mph (56km/h) winds in what may be the worst snowstorm in a decade.

Here BBC News website readers explain how the adverse weather conditions have been affecting their daily routines.

SANJAY AGARWAL, ASHBURN, VIRGINIA

We're in a suburb of Washington DC where the weather has been really bad - we have only made it up to the edge of our own driveway. We had to shovel every few hours or risk the snow accumulating, or icing over tonight.

There is not a soul on the streets, and there is almost a curfew-like situation.

It's still snowing and is extremely windy. We've had warnings not to venture outdoors in case chunks of snow slide off rooftops.

We are some of the fortunate ones who have electricity and heating - I know that many do not have that luxury tonight. Around 28 inches have fallen in our neighbourhood.

I measured it in three places, against the fire hydrant, against the mailbox, and against my four-year-old daughter Annika, just to get the most accurate reading.

All schools are closed anyway now for the holidays, but I work for IBM and we've been told all our offices in the DC area will remain closed on Monday.

JONATHAN HEYWOOD,RESTON,VIRGINIA

I am here on business and have been stuck in my hotel all day.

I'm trying to travel back home to Holland but my flight was cancelled.

I've since been told that I've been re-routed on a flight on Sunday via London and Paris, assuming the European airports are up and running by then.

Earlier, I ventured out with a few colleagues for dinner. We first had to dig out the car from under two feet of snow.

Roads were treacherous and deserted, and virtually all restaurants were closed.

We did find one that had a skeleton staff and a special "Blizzard 2009" menu on.

It is certainly the worst snowfall I have ever seen, except for when I've been skiing in the Alps.

TV stations have wall-to-wall coverage of the weather.

Everyone seems to be heeding the news reports and staying at home until this blows over.

Montazeri, a senior cleric and defender of Iranian opposition, dies at 87

Reporting from Tehran — One of Iran's most senior clerics, a staunch defender of the nation's opposition movement as well as a pillar of the Islamic revolution 31 years ago, passed away overnight, supporters told The Times today.

Grand Ayatollah Hussein-Ali Montazeri was 87.

Montazeri's son, Ahmad, told the Iranian Labor News Agency that his father was suffering from an unspecified illness and passed away late Saturday at his home in Qum, the Iranian shrine and seminary city 60 miles south of Tehran.

His death comes as Iranian protesters prepare to take part in emotionally charged and symbolically loaded Muharram ceremonies marking the Seventh Century martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Mohammad and a highly revered figure within Iran's majority Shiite Muslim faith.

Burial arrangements have yet to be made, but the anticipated ceremonies around his death could further galvanize a protest movement driven as much, if not more, by raw emotion over perceived injustice as rational political calculation.

Already this morning, weeping clerics and seminary students crammed inside and outside Montazeri's home in Qum to extend condolences and grieve, two clerics reached by telephone said. On the restive campus of Tehran University, nearly 50 students had gathered to mourn Montazeri upon learning of his death, a witness said.

"Ayatollah Montazeri will be remembered in the history of Iran as brave, open-minded and willing to say the truth at any time, even when encountering danger," Fazel Maybodi, a midranking reformist cleric and a disciple of Montazeri, said in a telephone interview from Qum.

"He was a faithful source of emulation in Islamic jurisprudence who initiated a huge change in the mentality and attitudes of the senior clergy," he said. "He braved all threats and dangers to honor his commitment as a senior cleric."

Born in 1922 in the Iranian town of Najafabad near the city of Isfahan, Montazeri pursued his religious studies in the seminaries of Qum. The scholar and theologian organized clergy to oppose the monarchical regime of the late Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, spending several years in prison during the 1970s.

After the 1979 revolution, he was the designated successor to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic, until a falling out in the late 1980s over major political differences.

Cast out of Iran's inner circle of power and stripped of his official posts, Montazeri over the last 20 years became outspoken critic of the Islamic Republic, calling for greater democracy and respect for human rights and civil liberties while often kept under surveillance in conditions that resembled house arrest.

Nonetheless, he served as an influential spiritual guide to the reform movement that peaked in the late 1990s during the presidency of Mohammad Khatami.

His stature and relevance further rose in the months following Iran's disputed June presidential elections, when he became a strong advocate for the opposition movement and challenged the Islamic Republic's legitimacy.

"A system which has been acting under the aegis of Islam and has the honor to be Shiite has created distrust toward Islam and religion not only in the world, but also among [our own] people and our young generations," he wrote in a letter posted to a reformist website in September. "[The system] has depicted Islam as unable to implement justice in society.

In November, he warned members of the pro-government Basiji militia that their violence against demonstrators was not religiously sanctioned."It would be a misfortune to go to hell for the sake of the worldly desires of others," he said, according to reformist websites.

The Iranian human rights group founded by Nobel Peace Prize winner Shirin Ebadi awarded Montazeri an annual award earlier this month.

Iran's semi-official Fars News Agency said that Ayatollah Yousef Sanaii, another clerical supporter of the opposition, was by Montazeri's side as he died. Maybodi said he died around midnight, in his sleep.
Mostaghim is a special correspondent.

Review: 'American Masters: Joan Baez: How Sweet the Sound' on PBS

He legend is fascinating, the person even more so.

By ROBERT LLOYD, Television Critic

Her future boyfriend and sometime musical partner Bob Dylan was still in high school in Minnesota when Joan Baez first played Club 47 in Cambridge, Mass., in 1958 at age 17. We see her there, and then, in “Joan Joan Baez: How Sweet the Sound,” airing tonight on PBS as part of the series "American Masters" -- a teenager with long, dark hair; a Spanish guitar; and a mature mezzo-soprano voice. The next year, she appeared at the Newport Folk Festival and became famous. She made records that went gold. She was on the cover of Time.

Her early stage fright made Baez seem doubly serious, and she was pretty serious to begin with, besotted with ancient songs of love and death but also with Mohandas K. Gandhi and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. In high school in Palo Alto, she refused to participate in an air-raid drill, denying "the whole possibility that this made any sense at all," and made the local papers. Thus was set the pattern for a lifetime.

If you were a Dylan fan who preferred the swinging Symbolist to the Prince of Protest who preceded him -- if you were, like, more "Desolation Row" than "Blowin' in the Wind" -- you might have regarded Baez as being overly political and insufficiently cool. It is true, as she says herself, that she wanted him to more enthusiastically share her enthusiasms. But differing interests split many young couples, not only those whose camera-ready love would follow them in pictures and recordings all the days of their lives, and right into this documentary.

As with most attempts to fit a life into the space of a television show -- especially a life that includes performance clips -- "How Sweet the Sound" is a blur that comes into focus intermittently. But if it doesn't fully give her context, it does give her her due and shows a spikier, rougher, funnier and sexier character than her reputation as a folk priestess ("a pristine little Virgin Mary" is how she puts it) would suggest. Baez, who is 68 now (and ever on tour), is not precious about herself or coy about her professional ambition or her personal shortcomings, which at times amounted to the same thing.

Still, like most episodes of "American Masters," it is fundamentally a testimonial. There are not a lot of commentators here, but they do include Dylan, who has only admiring things to say about Baez's voice, guitar playing and song selection. He likes the way their voices work together, but you wouldn't know from his comments that they ever were, as Baez says, "an item." Former Byrds Roger McGuinn and David Crosby praise her, as well, as do the Rev. Jesse Jackson, who knows her from the civil rights movement, and Steve Earle, who produced her most recent album.

Baez's life has unrolled along parallel tracks of music and politics -- "If you're committed to singing meaningful songs, you also have to be committed to leading a life that backs that up," she says, and we see her working for social justice in America and around the world.

But the film's best moments reveal the plain person between the activist and the singer, as in home movies of Baez romping with late sister Mimi Farina, or when she and ex-husband David Harris -- a movement leader who spent much of their marriage in prison as a draft resister -- discuss their failed relationship. A legend is never as interesting as the life it contains

Ghost Hunters: “FORT HENRY”

Fort Henry – Kingston, Ontario
TAPS heads north to explore the most haunted place in Canada. Fort Henry served as a prison and execution site for hundreds of dangerous convicts. Over the years, employees and visitors have witnessed a number of strange, frightening events.

Built in 1812, Fort Henry served as a prisoner-of-war camp for captured Nazis during World War II. Today, the fort is a National Heritage Site and a memorial to Canada’s military history. Historical eyewitness accounts suggest that paranormal entities have long been haunting the fort.

Strange apparitions, mysterious sounds of shattering glass and other ghostly activities have been recorded in this great maze of a military complex. Could the restless spirits of dead prisoners be stirring trouble? TAPS investigates.

Cool temps a change of pace for Chicago Marathon

Cool temps a change of pace for Chicago Marathon

Mary Frances Bragiel Reporting
CHICAGO (WBBM)  -- The streets of Chicago will be a sea of people Sunday morning as tens of thousands of runners participate in the annual Bank of America Chicago Marathon.

It was just two years ago when marathon officials were forced to cancel the 26.2 mile race due to extreme heat. The outcome is expected to be much different Sunday according to race director Carey Pinkowski thanks in part to what he calls ideal running weather.

"One of the things I'm excited about is that for the last two years we haven't seen the traditional cascade of people throwing clothes off and we capture all of those garments and they go to a local charity so that's a great piece of our event," Pinkowski said.

Nearly 36,000 runners, from all 50 state and 100 countries are participating in the event, which begins at 7:30 in Grant Park.

No parking zones will be enforced beginning at 1 a.m. Sunday.

The second-generation iPod Touch adds speaker and volume controls--and delivers one of the most polished media players available at a lower price

With its latest iteration of the iPod Touch, Apple has added two highly coveted features--external volume controls and a speaker--and lowered prices, too. However, the Touch's physical changes are incremental, and they don't bring the device up to the level of its sibling, the iPhone 3G.
To be sure, the lower prices make the Touch a more attractive purchase than before, coming in at $229 for 8GB (previously $299), $299 for 16GB, and $399 for 32GB (down from $499). The prices are more in line with what Apple and AT&T charge for the iPhone 3G: $199 for 8GB, and $299 for 16GB. (You don't have to pay a monthly fee to use the Touch, though.) While the amount is still more than what you might pay for competing media players, you get more with the Touch, too.

Let's begin with what stays the same. This version of the Touch continues to share many characteristics with the first-generation Touch and with the iPhone 3G. All have a bright, gorgeous, 3.5-inch, wide-screen multitouch display with 480-by-320-pixel resolution at 163 pixels per inch. All have 802.11b/g wireless support. And all sport the same operating system software that allows for easy navigation, a host of useful apps (Safari Web browser, calendar, e-mail, contacts, Google Maps, YouTube, weather, clock with multiple alarms and stopwatch, ordinary and scientific calculators, and notepad), and the ability to expand your device through Apple's App Store.

Playing music remains a breeze. Press the home button below the display to activate the screen, and then select Music from the dedicated buttons along the bottom of the screen. In vertical view, the music's cover art dominates the display; orient the player horizontally, and it switches to Cover Flow view, which lets you page through the cover art as if you were viewing a flip book.

In addition to easily setting playlists on the fly, you can now use the new Genius autoplaylist creation feature directly from the Touch. First you must enable this feature on iTunes 8; but once enabled, it makes creating a playlist from songs in your music library a snap. Genius won't work for every song--for example, if the song is not on iTunes' radar, or it lacks complete ID3 tags--but the feature is certainly a convenient, almost category-focused addition to the iPod Touch's repertoire.

Audio sounds adequate through the included earbuds, but you may want to consider upgrading, either to Apple's forthcoming, step-up $80 earphones or to a high-quality pair from a third-party vendor. The earphone jack remains at the bottom of the Touch, just as on the first-gen model; that's in contrast, oddly enough, to the iPhone 3G, which places the jack at the upper left of the unit.

You have good reason to upgrade your headphones: According to our tests, the second-generation iPod Touch improves its audio output dramatically, jumping up a notch to receive a rating of Superior on the PC World Test Center's suite of audio tests. The Touch, together with its new Nano sibling, are our new leaders in our audio output results.

According to Apple, the new Touch's battery life is significantly better for music playback: 36 hours, as compared with 22 hours for the first-generation model. Video playback is only a bit improved over the previous model, rated for 6 hours versus 5.

The Touch's physical design is slightly altered. The original model measured 4.3 inches tall by 2.4 inches wide and 0.33 inches deep; the new edition retains the height and width but shrinks the depth by a barely perceptible 0.03 of an inch (or half a millimeter). The new Touch is a smidgen lighter than the old, coming in at 4.05 ounces versus the first gen's weight of 4.2 ounces.

Leading the new hardware features for the Touch are the external volume controls. The rocker-like buttons are positioned along the upper-left side of the Touch, just as they are on the iPhone 3G. On this device, however, the buttons are made of a sharp, inexpensive-feeling black plastic. Though they're a welcome addition, I wish they better matched the overall feel of the metallic Touch. (Another button gripe: The home button feels chintzy when pressed, as it makes a clicking noise. The iPhone 3G's button operates far more smoothly, with no noise.)

The second-generation Touch also adds a speaker to the base of the unit, much like the iPhone 3G. But, again, the Touch is subpar in comparison: The sound is tinny and thin next to the audio emanating from the iPhone 3G; whether that is due to the iPhone 3G's differing construction (the iPhone has a plastic back, and is slightly deeper than the Touch) or owing to the speaker itself is unknown.

The third new hardware feature sees the integration of the Nike + iPod software and receiver (for capturing your movement data) into the Touch itself. Simply add the extra-cost Nike + iPod Sensor for your shoe, and the Touch becomes an appealing workout companion.

Still missing from the Touch are an integrated camera and GPS--both features found on the iPhone 3G. Also, it still lacks a voice recorder (a feature added back to the new iPod Nano) and--like all iPods--an FM tuner, although you can download apps (some at extra cost) to fill the voice-recording void and to gain Internet radio support (when you're connected over Wi-Fi).

Arguably, beyond the price drop, the big news about the Touch has nothing to do with the hardware and everything to do with the continuing evolution of the App Store, which offers plenty of games (700 and counting) among its arsenal. With the addition of games, the Touch widens its position as an entertainment platform.

The Touch remains a tremendous and innovative device, with enticing features, unparalleled ease of use, and plenty of expandability through the App Store. As attractive as it is, though, I still believe it has room to improve. New features coupled with lower prices increase the second-generation model's appeal, but this version of the Touch doesn't supply enough incentive for existing owners to upgrade.

Kimbo Slice foe Roy Nelson talks "Ultimate Fighter"

In a video interview I did in July with cast members of Spike TV's reality mixed martial arts fighting series, "The Ultimate Fighter: The Heavyweights," Roy Nelson discussed living in the same house with other fighters and how Kimbo Slice behaved.

Tonight, Nelson, also known as "Big Country" because of his inflatable belly, will fight Slice with the loser going home and the winner advancing toward December's live finale.

Filming of the Slice-Nelson fight had been completed by the time Nelson talked in this segment.

Although the mystery of how Slice fared remains, Ultimate Fighting Championship President Dana White told The Times earlier this month that Slice will remain in the UFC whether or not he wins the six-figure contract that comes with being "The Ultimate Fighter" champion.

Eastwick: Pilot (series premiere)

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free

S01E01) Is it bad that my favorite character on Eastwick is a supporting character? That would be the fabulous Sara Rue, who starred in Less Than Perfect from 2002 - 2006. I loved that show! She's done other stuff since then, but that's what I remember her for. in Eastwick, she plays the sideline character of Penny, a co-worker of Joanna's (Lindsay Price). Hopefully, Sara will get plenty of screen time.

Let's talk about the show. Eastwick is based on the John Updike book The Witches of Eastwick, which spawned the 1987 movie by the same name, starring Jack Nicholson, Cher, Susan Sarandon, and Michelle Pfeiffer. Of note is that Veronica Cartwright, who played Felicia Alden in the movie, is playing the part of Bun Waverly in this new series. There was also a 2002 TV movie starring Marcia Cross that perhaps had three or four viewers.

Eastwick is the small New England town where the series takes place. I really want to like this show (Mike Mike liked it better than me), but the jury's still out. Part of the reason I want it to succeed is that my other favorite show with three women, Lipstick Jungle, got canceled too soon. Lindsay Price was in that show, and here she is again in this one, although playing a much different character. She's a dorky, awkward, shy reporter who wants to write more than horoscopes and top lists for the local newspaper.

The other two women are sexy artist Roxanne Torcoletti (Rebecca Romijn) and registered nurse Kat Gardener (Jaime Ray Newman), who's raising five kids and a loser husband who hangs around the house all day drinking beer.

It's clear that all three women are wanting something in their lives, and each has special talents. I guess they're witches. No one ever comes out and says that, although the people in their lives know there's definitely something amiss -- especially Kat's husband, who becomes the target of a mysterious hammock fall and lightning bolt when she gets frustrated with him. Kat also has the ability to grow endless supplies of tomatoes. She's the Earth Witch.

Meanwhile, Joanna can make people do things by staring at them (the Mind Control Witch), and Roxanne can foretell the future with her dreams (the Psychic Witch). Bringing them all together is Darryl Van Horne (Paul Gross), who mysteriously appears in town after the three women make a wish in a fountain in the town square.

My problem with Darryl is that he doesn't seem to have any chemistry with any of the women, not even Roxanne, with whom it seems there might be a relationship brewing. He reminds me of a cross between Mr. Roarke on Fantasy Island and the faceless Charlie on Charlie's Angels.

There were some other inconsistencies with the show, as well. When Roxanne's daughter Mia comes home from a date, Roxanne eagerly asks her daughter which base she got to with the guy. Not exactly mom material there. But later, when Mia's in danger of being raped by this guy, Roxanne and Darryl race to her rescue (as it should be).

I realize that Joanna is supposed to be a social misfit, but the awkward talk about her vibrator named "Will" was weird, especially when the guy she likes, Will, was standing right behind her.I guess it was supposed to be funny. The show's all over the place in terms of genre -- comedy, drama, fantasy, romance. Not that there's anything particular wrong with that. Drop the fantasy, and it reminds me a little of Desperate Housewives.

I can see how Eastwick might be fun, with the witch element and Darryl helping the women to (maybe) realize their dreams. The town historian/storyteller seems to think he's evil. I guess we'll find out in upcoming episodes.

HANDSOME DEVIL: MAN WHO SPREAD HIV

In late May, Philippe Padieu was convicted in a Texas court of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for knowingly exposing multiple women to HIV. He was sentenced to 45 years in prison.
For years, however, women knew him as a handsome, charming companion, a confidant whom they never suspected of having other girlfriends -- or of carrying such a dark secret.

Garrett Gomez has ridden Pioneerof the Nile in each of his four victories, but he’s also ridden Florida Derby runner-up Dunkirk for trainer Todd Pletcher, who hopes to make the 20-horse Derby field despite marginal graded stakes earnings.

Baffert said he hasn’t thought about whether Gomez will be his Derby jockey.

The trainer caught I Want Revenge’s performance in Saturday’s $750,000 Wood Memorial, in which the colt got caught flat-footed at the start, trailed the field and then got through a wall of horses to win by 1½ lengths.

“That horse ran a really great race,” Baffert said. “It just shows you the quality of horses in California is very strong. This is a tough (Kentucky) Derby field. There are six or eight strong contenders. I’m just glad I’m part of the top five.

Night Football schedule for college football in 2009 is already well under way, and has already made some infamous headlines. Tonight, Thursday Night Football 2009 has one of the few games between top 25 college football teams this weekend, which is an important game for two ACC contenders.

The Thursday Night Football schedule 2009 started for college football with the ugly Oregon-Boise State game two weeks ago. Last week, while Thursday Night Football coverage was controlled by the Steelers and Titans, college football showed Georgia Tech nearly losing a 24 point lead to Clemson, before holding on. For this Thursday Night Football week, Georgia Tech will need a much better performance.

The 15'th ranked Yellow Jackets go to Miami tonight to face the Hurricanes, who are ranked 20'th after a thrilling win over Florida State. The Hurricanes are trying to return to national prominence, and many are eager to declare "The U" back after their opening win. Defeating Georgia Tech, which is projected to be a major ACC contender, would go a long way to continue that goal.

The Yellow Jackets also have to prove that their high preseason ranking isn't a fraud - a charge fueled by their near-disaster in the second half last Thursday night. But the Steelers and Titans helped overshadow that last week - though this week, the Yellow Jackets and Hurricane are the only Thursday Night Football game in town.

For the next two months, the Thursday Night Football schedule for 2009 will just have college games on ESPN. Next week has another premiere game, when fifth ranked Ole Miss goes to visit South Carolina. After that, the Big 12, ACC and Big East will split Thursday night games - with Oregon returning to Thursday night on the last week of the season, against Oregon State.

SE CupSarah Elizabeth Cupp Sees Generational Gap In Carter Racism Charge

SE Cupp:Sarah Elizabeth Cupp Sees Generational Gap In Carter Racism Charge – S.E. Cupp (se cupp) (s.e. cupp) aka Sarah Elizabeth Cupp who is a very conservative writer for the New York Times appeared on the Larry King show last night to talk about what Jimmy Carter’s racism remark.King asked:

“Would you admit there’s racism of the black president?

Cupp replied:

No, I don’t think so, and I think this speaks to sort of a generational gap. You know, my generation is not always so quick to jump to race. I think the Maureen Dowds and the Jimmy Carters tend to go there because that’s what was always done, but my generation doesn’t see racism in a Joe Wilson or racism at a tea party or a town hall. We’re looking at the issues. These issues are too important to racialize them and project this imagined racism onto health care or any other political issue.

Rush Limbaugh has been praising S.E. Cupp for her answers on his show by saying:
Yeah, projection, they’re projecting who they are on to everybody else. That’s S. E. Cupp just handing it to Larry King. He needed a cup to have his guest be S. E. Cupp. I want to expand on this generational thing here because I have — actually the thought came from the editrix from the Limbaugh Letter, Diana Schneider Allocco — no, Allocco is the last name. People might think I was calling her a loco, that’s the big guy’s last name and like a traditional woman she took it when she got married. She said, “Rush, O great one, I’ve been reading the analysis –” well, she didn’t put that in there. I just kind of threw it in. “Rush I’ve been reading the analysis of Obama’s bad poll numbers among seasoned citizens and I’ve seen a lot of mention of retirees and seasoned citizens at town halls and tea parties as well as the big 9/12 march.” You know, it occurs to me, this is kind of an upended version of the sixties. In the sixties, the radicalized Baby Boomers, then in their teens and twenties, protested the establishment, their parents, remember don’t trust anybody over 30? The media was celebrating the whole generational split thing. Generation gap were the buzzwords of the day.

Guess what, the generational split has come home to roost. The old generation is now picketing the former “hell, no, we won’t go” crowd that is running Washington. The oldsters are marching on Washington against their kids. And against people their kids’ age. Obviously it’s not a race thing at all. This is generational. It’s actually what S. E. Cupp said. Did you Google S. E. Cupp? All right, now you know. So it’s exactly what S. E. Cupp said here on Larry King Alive. My generation doesn’t see racism. It’s a generational thing here, not to mention the long-in-coming smack down by those of us Boomers who have had it up to here with our arrogant anti-American boomer peers. The Baby Boomers make up a lot of people. I’m a boomer, but I’m embarrassed by over half my generation, a bunch of putzes, a bunch of spoiled rotten malcontents, have too much time on their hands and everything is about me, me, me, me, me, and that too much time on their hands and that me, me, me, me, me is what gave us Center for the Science and Public Interest, and that’s what gave us the animal rights movement, and that’s what gave us all these other movements to deny people freedom and liberty because these people don’t even have to go out and get jobs.

They can set up foundations, ask for donations, and make a nice living off everybody else, while pretending to do good works. And they infuriate me as much as they infuriate others who are older than they are. So it’s a great point Diana Allocco makes — did you catch that? — of course it has nothing to do with race. It is generational. It has been upended because these tie-dyed blue jean longhaired, maggot-infested, dope-smoking Cretans from the sixties were blowing up bank buildings saying, “Hell, no, we won’t go,” they’re now running Washington. They got their foot in the door with Clinton. Some of them are still there. Obama has sealed the deal. And now the very people they were protesting against are saying, “Screw you! We don’t want what you are. We didn’t like it when you were blowing up our banks back then, and we don’t like it when you’re destroying our country now, so to hell with you. Hell, no, we aren’t going to go. You say, yes, we can. We say, no, you the hell won’t.” And that’s what’s going on out there. It’s exactly what’s going on. Now, that was S. E. Cupp. See what that inspired? Here’s Gibbs yesterday at the White House, Jake Tapper says, “ACORN, a group the president’s had some ties with over the years, Census Bureau has thrown ‘em under the bus and the Senate overwhelmingly voted to cut off housing funding.”

Is perceived racism necessarily generational?

Do You Know The Story Of Pepperoni Pizza?

Also known as "pizza pie" in America, pizza is a very popular dish world wide. It's commonly made of ingredients such as yeast, salt, sugar, pepper and basil. For its toppings, often used are herbs, various types of vegetables, tomato sauce, garlic paste, cheese and so on. There are different types of pizzas such as sausage pizza, New York-style, Chicago-style and pepperoni just to name a few.
One of the most popular and famous types of pizzas is Pepperoni pizza. In this type, pepperoni is used as topping and hence the name. Pepperoni pizza is made of dry salami prepared with the help of goat, pork, beef and fish. Compared to other types, it's highly preferred and eaten by many in America.
Ingredients mostly used in making the pepperoni pizza normally differ and depend on the person doing it. Nevertheless, the commonly used ingredients are spaghetti or tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, olive oil, gravy which makes it tastier, Minced garlic, salt, pepper and oregano which adds a good taste. Pepperoni is also used and mostly preferred when spicy. It is also used as topping for the American-style pizzerias and for preparing sandwiches.
Pepperoni pizza is a descendant of Italian spicy type of Salami, though it's basically an Italian-American dish that is usually made up of the various types of dry salami prepared with the help of different types of meat such as pork, beef e.t.c. The name of Pepperoni pizza comes from 'Peperone' which is an Italian plural referring to bell pepper. It was basically evolved in Italian-American cuisine.

South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson yells 'You lie!' to the president

It was a perfect storm of hot buttons that evoked an utterance of such negativity that it turned heads. President Barack Obama was giving a speech to Congress and he started talking about healthcare and illegal immigrants and money, and unexpectedly, Rep. Joe Wilson of South Carolina spoke up.

"You lie!" the Republican congressman blurted out on the floor of the House immediately after the president said: "the reforms I’m proposing would not apply to those who are here illegally."

Joe_wilson It was Rep. Wilson who had been reinforcing the belief that the healthcare reform would include the so-called Death Panels. He called it an "end-of-life counseling program, which has been correctly highlighted by former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as a program which could lead to seniors being encouraged to seek less care in order to protect the government´s bottom line."

Minutes before Wilson's wail, the president had debunked the theory that grandma's plug would be pulled in order to save federal dollars. "It's a lie, plain and simple," he said, which brought most of the attendees to their feet.

After the speech, the criticism for Wilson was bipartisan. "I've never seen anything like that before," said Rep. Earl Pomeroy (D-N.D.) "We do not invite the president of the United States into the House of Representatives and hurl insults."

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said the outburst was "totally disrespectful" and demanded that Rep. Wilson apologize to the president. "No place for it in that setting or any other, and he should apologize for it immediately," McCain told Larry King on CNN.

Wilson apologized shortly after the speech for how he acted out: “This evening I let my emotions get the best of me when listening to the president’s remarks regarding the coverage of illegal immigrants in the healthcare bill. While I disagree with the president’s statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable. I extend sincere apologies to the president for this lack of civility.”

So how did you feel about the speech, the outburst, and/or the apology? Blurt out your comments in the field below.
