Eastwick: Pilot (series premiere)

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free

S01E01) Is it bad that my favorite character on Eastwick is a supporting character? That would be the fabulous Sara Rue, who starred in Less Than Perfect from 2002 - 2006. I loved that show! She's done other stuff since then, but that's what I remember her for. in Eastwick, she plays the sideline character of Penny, a co-worker of Joanna's (Lindsay Price). Hopefully, Sara will get plenty of screen time.

Let's talk about the show. Eastwick is based on the John Updike book The Witches of Eastwick, which spawned the 1987 movie by the same name, starring Jack Nicholson, Cher, Susan Sarandon, and Michelle Pfeiffer. Of note is that Veronica Cartwright, who played Felicia Alden in the movie, is playing the part of Bun Waverly in this new series. There was also a 2002 TV movie starring Marcia Cross that perhaps had three or four viewers.

Eastwick is the small New England town where the series takes place. I really want to like this show (Mike Mike liked it better than me), but the jury's still out. Part of the reason I want it to succeed is that my other favorite show with three women, Lipstick Jungle, got canceled too soon. Lindsay Price was in that show, and here she is again in this one, although playing a much different character. She's a dorky, awkward, shy reporter who wants to write more than horoscopes and top lists for the local newspaper.

The other two women are sexy artist Roxanne Torcoletti (Rebecca Romijn) and registered nurse Kat Gardener (Jaime Ray Newman), who's raising five kids and a loser husband who hangs around the house all day drinking beer.

It's clear that all three women are wanting something in their lives, and each has special talents. I guess they're witches. No one ever comes out and says that, although the people in their lives know there's definitely something amiss -- especially Kat's husband, who becomes the target of a mysterious hammock fall and lightning bolt when she gets frustrated with him. Kat also has the ability to grow endless supplies of tomatoes. She's the Earth Witch.

Meanwhile, Joanna can make people do things by staring at them (the Mind Control Witch), and Roxanne can foretell the future with her dreams (the Psychic Witch). Bringing them all together is Darryl Van Horne (Paul Gross), who mysteriously appears in town after the three women make a wish in a fountain in the town square.

My problem with Darryl is that he doesn't seem to have any chemistry with any of the women, not even Roxanne, with whom it seems there might be a relationship brewing. He reminds me of a cross between Mr. Roarke on Fantasy Island and the faceless Charlie on Charlie's Angels.

There were some other inconsistencies with the show, as well. When Roxanne's daughter Mia comes home from a date, Roxanne eagerly asks her daughter which base she got to with the guy. Not exactly mom material there. But later, when Mia's in danger of being raped by this guy, Roxanne and Darryl race to her rescue (as it should be).

I realize that Joanna is supposed to be a social misfit, but the awkward talk about her vibrator named "Will" was weird, especially when the guy she likes, Will, was standing right behind her.I guess it was supposed to be funny. The show's all over the place in terms of genre -- comedy, drama, fantasy, romance. Not that there's anything particular wrong with that. Drop the fantasy, and it reminds me a little of Desperate Housewives.

I can see how Eastwick might be fun, with the witch element and Darryl helping the women to (maybe) realize their dreams. The town historian/storyteller seems to think he's evil. I guess we'll find out in upcoming episodes.

HANDSOME DEVIL: MAN WHO SPREAD HIV

In late May, Philippe Padieu was convicted in a Texas court of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for knowingly exposing multiple women to HIV. He was sentenced to 45 years in prison.
For years, however, women knew him as a handsome, charming companion, a confidant whom they never suspected of having other girlfriends -- or of carrying such a dark secret.

yesterday. You get a little bit out of each race, and it prepares me for the Derby, so I’m really happy with my situation right now.”

Garrett Gomez has ridden Pioneerof the Nile in each of his four victories, but he’s also ridden Florida Derby runner-up Dunkirk for trainer Todd Pletcher, who hopes to make the 20-horse Derby field despite marginal graded stakes earnings.

Baffert said he hasn’t thought about whether Gomez will be his Derby jockey.

The trainer caught I Want Revenge’s performance in Saturday’s $750,000 Wood Memorial, in which the colt got caught flat-footed at the start, trailed the field and then got through a wall of horses to win by 1½ lengths.

“That horse ran a really great race,” Baffert said. “It just shows you the quality of horses in California is very strong. This is a tough (Kentucky) Derby field. There are six or eight strong contenders. I’m just glad I’m part of the top five.

Thursday Night Football Schedule 2009 Now Belongs to College Football
Night Football schedule for college football in 2009 is already well under way, and has already made some infamous headlines. Tonight, Thursday Night Football 2009 has one of the few games between top 25 college football teams this weekend, which is an important game for two ACC contenders.

The Thursday Night Football schedule 2009 started for college football with the ugly Oregon-Boise State game two weeks ago. Last week, while Thursday Night Football coverage was controlled by the Steelers and Titans, college football showed Georgia Tech nearly losing a 24 point lead to Clemson, before holding on. For this Thursday Night Football week, Georgia Tech will need a much better performance.

The 15'th ranked Yellow Jackets go to Miami tonight to face the Hurricanes, who are ranked 20'th after a thrilling win over Florida State. The Hurricanes are trying to return to national prominence, and many are eager to declare "The U" back after their opening win. Defeating Georgia Tech, which is projected to be a major ACC contender, would go a long way to continue that goal.

The Yellow Jackets also have to prove that their high preseason ranking isn't a fraud - a charge fueled by their near-disaster in the second half last Thursday night. But the Steelers and Titans helped overshadow that last week - though this week, the Yellow Jackets and Hurricane are the only Thursday Night Football game in town.

For the next two months, the Thursday Night Football schedule for 2009 will just have college games on ESPN. Next week has another premiere game, when fifth ranked Ole Miss goes to visit South Carolina. After that, the Big 12, ACC and Big East will split Thursday night games - with Oregon returning to Thursday night on the last week of the season, against Oregon State.

SE CupSarah Elizabeth Cupp Sees Generational Gap In Carter Racism Charge

SE Cupp:Sarah Elizabeth Cupp Sees Generational Gap In Carter Racism Charge – S.E. Cupp (se cupp) (s.e. cupp) aka Sarah Elizabeth Cupp who is a very conservative writer for the New York Times appeared on the Larry King show last night to talk about what Jimmy Carter’s racism remark.King asked:

“Would you admit there’s racism of the black president?

Cupp replied:

No, I don’t think so, and I think this speaks to sort of a generational gap. You know, my generation is not always so quick to jump to race. I think the Maureen Dowds and the Jimmy Carters tend to go there because that’s what was always done, but my generation doesn’t see racism in a Joe Wilson or racism at a tea party or a town hall. We’re looking at the issues. These issues are too important to racialize them and project this imagined racism onto health care or any other political issue.

Rush Limbaugh has been praising S.E. Cupp for her answers on his show by saying:
Yeah, projection, they’re projecting who they are on to everybody else. That’s S. E. Cupp just handing it to Larry King. He needed a cup to have his guest be S. E. Cupp. I want to expand on this generational thing here because I have — actually the thought came from the editrix from the Limbaugh Letter, Diana Schneider Allocco — no, Allocco is the last name. People might think I was calling her a loco, that’s the big guy’s last name and like a traditional woman she took it when she got married. She said, “Rush, O great one, I’ve been reading the analysis –” well, she didn’t put that in there. I just kind of threw it in. “Rush I’ve been reading the analysis of Obama’s bad poll numbers among seasoned citizens and I’ve seen a lot of mention of retirees and seasoned citizens at town halls and tea parties as well as the big 9/12 march.” You know, it occurs to me, this is kind of an upended version of the sixties. In the sixties, the radicalized Baby Boomers, then in their teens and twenties, protested the establishment, their parents, remember don’t trust anybody over 30? The media was celebrating the whole generational split thing. Generation gap were the buzzwords of the day.

Guess what, the generational split has come home to roost. The old generation is now picketing the former “hell, no, we won’t go” crowd that is running Washington. The oldsters are marching on Washington against their kids. And against people their kids’ age. Obviously it’s not a race thing at all. This is generational. It’s actually what S. E. Cupp said. Did you Google S. E. Cupp? All right, now you know. So it’s exactly what S. E. Cupp said here on Larry King Alive. My generation doesn’t see racism. It’s a generational thing here, not to mention the long-in-coming smack down by those of us Boomers who have had it up to here with our arrogant anti-American boomer peers. The Baby Boomers make up a lot of people. I’m a boomer, but I’m embarrassed by over half my generation, a bunch of putzes, a bunch of spoiled rotten malcontents, have too much time on their hands and everything is about me, me, me, me, me, and that too much time on their hands and that me, me, me, me, me is what gave us Center for the Science and Public Interest, and that’s what gave us the animal rights movement, and that’s what gave us all these other movements to deny people freedom and liberty because these people don’t even have to go out and get jobs.

They can set up foundations, ask for donations, and make a nice living off everybody else, while pretending to do good works. And they infuriate me as much as they infuriate others who are older than they are. So it’s a great point Diana Allocco makes — did you catch that? — of course it has nothing to do with race. It is generational. It has been upended because these tie-dyed blue jean longhaired, maggot-infested, dope-smoking Cretans from the sixties were blowing up bank buildings saying, “Hell, no, we won’t go,” they’re now running Washington. They got their foot in the door with Clinton. Some of them are still there. Obama has sealed the deal. And now the very people they were protesting against are saying, “Screw you! We don’t want what you are. We didn’t like it when you were blowing up our banks back then, and we don’t like it when you’re destroying our country now, so to hell with you. Hell, no, we aren’t going to go. You say, yes, we can. We say, no, you the hell won’t.” And that’s what’s going on out there. It’s exactly what’s going on. Now, that was S. E. Cupp. See what that inspired? Here’s Gibbs yesterday at the White House, Jake Tapper says, “ACORN, a group the president’s had some ties with over the years, Census Bureau has thrown ‘em under the bus and the Senate overwhelmingly voted to cut off housing funding.”

Is perceived racism necessarily generational?

Do You Know The Story Of Pepperoni Pizza?

Also known as "pizza pie" in America, pizza is a very popular dish world wide. It's commonly made of ingredients such as yeast, salt, sugar, pepper and basil. For its toppings, often used are herbs, various types of vegetables, tomato sauce, garlic paste, cheese and so on. There are different types of pizzas such as sausage pizza, New York-style, Chicago-style and pepperoni just to name a few.
One of the most popular and famous types of pizzas is Pepperoni pizza. In this type, pepperoni is used as topping and hence the name. Pepperoni pizza is made of dry salami prepared with the help of goat, pork, beef and fish. Compared to other types, it's highly preferred and eaten by many in America.
Ingredients mostly used in making the pepperoni pizza normally differ and depend on the person doing it. Nevertheless, the commonly used ingredients are spaghetti or tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, olive oil, gravy which makes it tastier, Minced garlic, salt, pepper and oregano which adds a good taste. Pepperoni is also used and mostly preferred when spicy. It is also used as topping for the American-style pizzerias and for preparing sandwiches.
Pepperoni pizza is a descendant of Italian spicy type of Salami, though it's basically an Italian-American dish that is usually made up of the various types of dry salami prepared with the help of different types of meat such as pork, beef e.t.c. The name of Pepperoni pizza comes from 'Peperone' which is an Italian plural referring to bell pepper. It was basically evolved in Italian-American cuisine.

South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson yells 'You lie!' to the president

It was a perfect storm of hot buttons that evoked an utterance of such negativity that it turned heads. President Barack Obama was giving a speech to Congress and he started talking about healthcare and illegal immigrants and money, and unexpectedly, Rep. Joe Wilson of South Carolina spoke up.

"You lie!" the Republican congressman blurted out on the floor of the House immediately after the president said: "the reforms I’m proposing would not apply to those who are here illegally."

Joe_wilson It was Rep. Wilson who had been reinforcing the belief that the healthcare reform would include the so-called Death Panels. He called it an "end-of-life counseling program, which has been correctly highlighted by former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as a program which could lead to seniors being encouraged to seek less care in order to protect the government´s bottom line."

Minutes before Wilson's wail, the president had debunked the theory that grandma's plug would be pulled in order to save federal dollars. "It's a lie, plain and simple," he said, which brought most of the attendees to their feet.

After the speech, the criticism for Wilson was bipartisan. "I've never seen anything like that before," said Rep. Earl Pomeroy (D-N.D.) "We do not invite the president of the United States into the House of Representatives and hurl insults."

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said the outburst was "totally disrespectful" and demanded that Rep. Wilson apologize to the president. "No place for it in that setting or any other, and he should apologize for it immediately," McCain told Larry King on CNN.

Wilson apologized shortly after the speech for how he acted out: “This evening I let my emotions get the best of me when listening to the president’s remarks regarding the coverage of illegal immigrants in the healthcare bill. While I disagree with the president’s statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable. I extend sincere apologies to the president for this lack of civility.”

So how did you feel about the speech, the outburst, and/or the apology? Blurt out your comments in the field below.

Obama health care speech video and Joe Wilson south carolina Congressman

WASHINGTON, Sept 10 (KUNA): Obama health care speech video and Joe Wilson south carolina Congressman. In what analysts saw as his last, best chance to salvage his top domestic priority -- US health care reform legislation -- President Barack Obama said that "the time for games has passed," and that the best ideas of both political parties must be combined in order to "deliver on health care." The President has been under fire for letting congressional committees provide the details of health care reform legislation, while he avoided committing to some of the most controversial specifics -- including a "public option" for government-run health care.

On Wednesday night, he told Congress there was nothing in his plan that would require Americans who are satisfied with their health coverage to make any changes.

"Under this plan, it will be against the law for insurance companies to deny you coverage because of a pre-existing condition," Obama said.

"As soon as I sign this bill, it will be against the law for insurance companies to drop your coverage when you get sick or water it down when you need it most. They will no longer be able to place some arbitrary cap on the amount of coverage you can receive in a given year or a lifetime." The plan will limit how much an individual can be charged for out-of-pocket expenses, "because in the United States of America, no one should go broke because they get sick," he said. "And insurance companies will be required to cover, with no extra charge, routine checkups and preventive care, like mammograms and colonoscopies, because there is no reason we should not be catching diseases like breast cancer and colon cancer before they get worse." For the tens of millions of Americans who lack health insurance, the plan will offer "quality, affordable choices," the President said. "If you lose your job or change your job, you will be able to get coverage. If you strike out on your own and start a small business, you will be able to get coverage." This will be accomplished by creating a new insurance exchange "a marketplace where individuals and small businesses will be able to shop for health insurance at competitive prices," Obama said.

Insurance companies will have an incentive to participate in the exchange because it will let them compete for millions of new customers, he said.

"As one big group, these customers will have greater leverage to bargain with the insurance companies for better prices and quality coverage," he added.
